When orphaned Wren Fran Abbott meets aristocratic Pearl Galsworthy in wartime London, a whole new world opens up to her. Then her best friend is killed in a random accident and Fran is left devastated – and as alone as she was when they met. After she is demobbed, Fran is unsure what to do with her independence – she has no attachments and no real qualifications, and her loose connection with Pearl’s family is her only link to the past. Initially, working as housekeeper to the louche Alex Condermine, Pearl’s uncle by marriage, seems as good an option as any, but happiness remains elusive. Travelling from Wiltshire to Yorkshire to Cornwall, Pearl seems fated to sustain only fleeting relationships, until she chances upon a radio programme that brings her new purpose.
